Lifestyle

Working at sea is more than just a job it is a life style choice. Rest Area
It is fantastic fun but it is also hard work. Hours are long and you will work 7 days a week for sometimes up to 13 hours a day. However, the rewards are also great; where else do you get a chance to combine work and travel? You will rotate around all the ships (in accordance with the brands you are assigned to) so you will also have the opportunity to visit some of the most exotic locations across the world.  You will also have the opportunity to work within a multinational work force , where your team will become more than just work colleagues , they will become  your friends too.

Dependent on your position and contract type your appointment on board may vary from approximately 3.5 months to 6 months at a time.  You will then take a period of leave prior to being offered another join date.  You will need to be prepared to miss important events at home such as Anniversaries and Birthdays.  You will be paid for the time that you are on board but not for the periods when you are on leave.  Salaries are competitive and as a seafarer, under UK tax law, you may be entitled to claim your tax back once you have been out of the UK for more than 184 days in any one year. You will typically have minimal costs onboard as your food and accommodation is all paid for, and as there are no 'bills' to pay  for (apart from your personal account) so this is a great opportunity to save money.

To be able  to work at sea any candidates must be of good general health and physique, and pass a Maritime & Coastguard Agency certified medical examination (ENG1), including the eyesight examination.  Eligibility to obtain an American C1 D visa is also vital.  Safety at sea is of crucial importance so in addition to your work related duties you will also have mandatory safety duties to fulfil on a regular basis.

Shared accommodationDependent on the Rank in which you are recruited in at you will either be allocated a shared or single occupancy cabin.  Generally an Officer holding the rank of 1 Stripe or above will be provided with a Single occupancy cabin.  In accordance with your ranking you may also be able to enjoy most of the passenger facilities in your leisure time.  There are also fantastic crew facilities on board, including a crew gym, bar and library. Opportunities for socialising with your on board colleagues are frequent. Your family and friends can also benefit too upon completion of a qualifying period they will be eligible to join you onboard for certain periods at generously discounted rates.
