Working onboard

Our onboard medics are exceptional people; faced with a varied caseload on a daily basis the experience gained is hard to come by in any other area of the medical profession.  Faced with daily challenges and unusual scenarios, our medics handle anything from minor illnesses to major trauma. Dont expect it all to be stereotypical sea sickness and sunburn; as part of the medical team onboard you will need to utilise all your clinical skills and training to handle the more challenging and diverse cases that our medical team see. 

Tours of duty are of approximately four months duration followed by 4-8 weeks leave resulting in approximately 243 days work per year.

Doctor

As the Doctor you will work closely with the Senior Doctor to provide medical care to both the passengers and crew onboard the ship. Your primary concern will be the healthcare of the crew, however, you will also assist with the care of passengers if the workload demands. The crew are recruited worldwide and can sometimes comprise of over 50 nationalities, offering both cultural and clinical challenges.

Outside of the twice daily clinic hours, you will work with the Senior Doctor as either first or second on call to deal with any emergencies that may occur. 

Conditions typically seen on a day-to-day basis can include minor illnesses, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, minor skin complaints and fractures and accidental injuries that happen either onboard or ashore. However, other diverse critical care cases also occur, particularly cardiac, metabolic and pulmonary conditions.  Please see “Clinical cases” studies to explore these further. 

In addition to your clinical duties, you will also have opportunity to complete your own xrays, laboratory tests and administration.

Carnival UK is a designated Body for revalidation with a Responsible Officer, We offer a full programme of appraisal, clinical governance and CPD; working with our Doctors towards their revalidation.

Nurse

As a member of the Ship’s nursing team, you will be responsible for providing high standards of individualised patient care to passengers and crew. Under the guidance of the Senior Nurse you will work together to ensure a safe and efficient nursing operation within the Medical Department.

Working closely with your medical colleagues, you will providing both in and out patient care. Outpatient presentations include minor illnesses, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, minor skin complaints and accidental injuries. In-patient care encompasses the management of a wide variety of clinical problems including cardiac disease (thrombolysis and cardiac monitoring), trauma/orthopaedic problems and acute medical and surgical emergencies. You will be encouraged to use and maintain any extended skills in which you are competent e.g. venepuncture, cannulation, suturing etc.

You will have the opportunity to develop skills in several areas including laboratory testing, radiography, computer work, dispensing of medication and the control and monitoring of stock. A comprehensive competency and CPD programme, subscription to BMJ eLearning and supported training ensures ample opportunity for professional development. Career progression to the Senior Nurse role is actively encouraged.

You will need to excel both clinically and in customer service skills. Confidence in patient assessment and the initiation of care will be an asset as will the ability to meet the challenges of learning to nurse in a new and different environment.
