Graduate entry

We also offer a Graduate Entry Trainee scheme which offers a more direct route to the role of Electro-Technical Officer following the basic outline of a standard Electro-Technical cadetship, but taking only 13 months rather than three years.

The Graduate programme comprises:

Phase 1 - Initial College Phase

This is a residential course at one of the three maritime colleges, which includes consolidation of workshop processes, shipboard familiarisation, and safety and survival-at-sea courses as well as a basic fire-fighting course.

Topics covered during the course include the following:

  • Use of hand tools and machine tools
  • Metal joining
  • Engineering plant maintenance
  • Marine engineering systems
  • Circuit testing
  • Marine electrical power supply system
  • A.C. generators
  • Electric propulsion
  • A.C. motors and control
  • Engine Room instrumentation, alarms and data logging
  • Low power services and miscellaneous equipment
  • Satellite Communication Equipment
Phase 2 - At Sea

After successful completion of the college course, Cadets are required to spend two four-month periods at sea on one of our ships. This enables them to develop the practical knowledge and experience required for promotion to a junior Electro-Technical Officer position within the fleet.

Phase 3 - Final College Phase

This final phase will include training in PSC&RB, Medical First Aid and Advanced Fire Fighting.

Entry Requirements

The preferred qualification for entry into the training scheme is an HND in either Electronics & Communications, Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience in a Electrical/Electronic discipline.
